BEIJING: Chinese tech giant Huawei on Tuesday unveiled its first smartphone equipped with a fully homegrown operating system, a key test in the firm’s fight to challenge the dominance of Western juggernauts. Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are currently used in the vast majority of mobile phones, but Huawei is looking to change that with its newest Mate 70 devices, which run on the company’s own HarmonyOS Next. The team that created the Populus Hotel in downtown Denver, Colorado, isn’t banking on the “sustainable travel” trend for success. Seven years in the making, the already buzzy hotel, with its all-white exterior created to look like an Aspen tree trunk, is promising to be the first carbon-positive hotel in the United States. Through a series of initiatives like composting and tree planting (more on that later), they promise to offset more carbon than the hotel emits. Yet it isn’t the promise of sustainability they see customers coming for—though that will surely be the case for many visitors—it’s the stunning architecture, decor, and service. According to Jon Buerge, president of Urban Villages, the development company behind the hotel, building with the environment in mind is the responsibility of the business owners first. When people get there, they can learn about all the choices made to create it that way—hopefully taking away information about why it’s so important. Thankfully, the building itself is a 13-floor, triangle-shaped wonder. The scalloped windows and bright white color make it stick out against the nearby Colorado State Capitol building and its surrounding parks. When you walk in the front doors, you’re immediately greeted with an upscale restaurant to your left and a high-end coffee shop to your right. Receptionists sit behind an upcycled giant oak tree desk, excited to tell you all about how your room key fob is actually a hidden wild tree seed that you can plant when you get home. The building was designed by Studio Gang , an architecture firm based in Chicago. The inspiration was the Colorado outdoors, from the exterior all the way through the perfectly timed forest noises that play in the elevators (although hearing a bellowing moose without explanation was admittedly a little alarming at first). Buerge points out that the building and construction industries are responsible for a significant amount of emissions— 37% according to recent reporting by the United Nations —and that their goal is to lead a change to show that you can build a hotel that is both an attraction and has a lower impact on the environment. Inside the rooms, the shape of the windows makes for luxuriously soft natural lighting. Some feature padded hammock-like seating at the bottom of the windows, while others have nearly two full walls of windows spaced just a few feet apart. The suites are like most upscale hotels, complete with a full-size tub and a three-prong shower—but with all local decor and vintage finds. What’s more, every night you stay in one of these rooms, the hotel promises to plant a tree—a carbon offset strategy used because trees absorb CO2. The key is that they do it locally, with naturally occurring trees like Engelmann spruce, Lodgepole pine, and Douglas fir. (A critique of tree-planting initiatives is that they are an easy way out for corporations and when done improperly, can contribute to deforestation and ecological damage in vulnerable areas. ) The restaurants, however, are the real shining stars of the building. Locals mention that downtown, there aren’t many decent places to take a meeting or have an upscale cocktail and dining experience, meaning the opening of the downstairs restaurant Pasqul and the upstairs rooftop bar and restaurant Skylark is a welcome addition. When we arrived, it was the first day open, and the restaurants were already doing a roaring trade. The key decor piece of the hotel, meanwhile, is a mycelium leather art piece above the bar, made by Mycoworks. (Although curiously, despite having a vegan leather centerpiece, the plant-forward menu at Pasquel only had meat dishes for the main courses.) That aside, what they do with the food after it’s served is the most interesting thing. 80 million pounds of food are wasted annually in the United States. The on-site circular food waste technology, Biogreen360 , “allows us to take all of the food waste from any of our outlets, whether that's food that was not eaten by guests or standard prep waste in our kitchens that can't be fixed with the high-efficiency operation they have back there,” Thomas, the hotel sustainability manager, explained. “We like to call it from farm to table and back from table to farm.” One piece of the sustainability puzzle that the designers at the Populus also didn’t want to overlook was the clothing, particularly uniforms for staff. At the hotel, waitstaff and front desk wear chore coats (a choice that brings a more-casual local feeling vibe to an otherwise high-end establishment) made by Quince, an Oekotex-certified clothing brand, and the aprons are made by a local Denver husband and wife design team, Valentich . With the hotel just opening, time will tell if the goal of becoming one of the top sustainable travel choices in the country will be fulfilled. Microsoft’s AI Recall Tool Found Saving Credit Card and Social Security Numbers Back in May, Microsoft jubilantly announced Recall, an AI feature for some Windows PCs that silently takes screenshots every five seconds and then allows you to easily search through the resulting digital footprint. Forgotten where you saw a recipe online? Tapping a couple of keywords into Recall could, in theory, find the dish again. It didn’t take long for the privacy and security community to find gaping holes in the feature . In response, Microsoft delayed Recall’s launch and eventually made some significant changes —such as making Recall opt-in rather than on by default, better encrypting information captured by Recall, and adding authentication to access data that it stored. Recall finally launched for some users this month. However, this week, testing of Recall by Tom’s Hardware demonstrated that a key safeguard put in place by Microsoft can still fail. With a Recall setting called “filter sensitive information” turned on, Tom’s Hardware’s tests found that it still took screenshots of some sensitive information—such as credit card numbers and Social Security numbers. When the publication typed a credit card number and a username and password into a Notepad window, they were gathered in the screenshots. “Similarly, when I filled out a loan application PDF in Microsoft Edge, entering a social security number, name and DOB, Recall captured that,” Avram Piltch writes . The tool, however, didn’t record details when they were entered on a couple of online stores. Microsoft pointed to its product information that says the system will get better over time and that people should report if sensitive information is captured by Recall. While that may be the case, it’s unlikely that any system can correctly determine what is and isn’t sensitive every time. And that could make it a bigger target for hackers. 14 North Koreans Identified and Indicted as Fraudulent IT Workers For years, North Korean nationals posing as tech workers have tried to get hired by global businesses so they can send their wages back to help the Hermit Kingdom pay for its nuclear programs. Increasingly, some companies are revealing they were targeted, and investigators are unravelling the schemes. This week, the US government indicted 14 North Koreans for their alleged role in generating $88 million , stealing sensitive business information, and attempting to use that information to extort more payments from companies. To get hired, the FBI alleges, the IT workers stole real identities, paid people in the US to use their home Wi-Fi connections, or paid them to attend job interviews. Researchers from Google-owned cybersecurity firm Mandiant who focus on North Korea say that in recent months they’ve seen IT workers following through on leaking sensitive data and demanding more cryptocurrency than ever before—although, they say this desperation could be a sign of the schemes becoming less effective. Cleo File-sharing Software Exploited to Spread Cybercriminal Malware File-sharing software firm Cleo this week warned customers to implement a new security patch to prevent a wave of intrusions by cybercriminals actively exploiting a vulnerability in its code. Researchers at security firm Huntress Labs told news outlet Recorded Future that at least two dozen organizations have already been breached by the hackers exploiting the Cleo flaw. Huntress has found a sample of malware found on those victims’ networks it calls Malichus, and says it appears to have been used by a sophisticated hacker group. Huntress also noted that Blue Yonder, a software firm breached by the Termite ransomware gang in November, had a vulnerable instance of Cleo’s software exposed on its network, and some evidence suggests the same cybercrime group may now be using the software’s vulnerability to hit other victims. Cleo first released a patch for the bug currently being exploited in October, but hackers appear to have circumvented it, and the company is urging customers to apply its new patch now. US Sanctions Chinese Hackers Who Allegedly Hijacked Thousands of Firewalls For five years, UK cybersecurity firm Sophos engaged in a cat-and-mouse game with a mysterious group of Chinese hackers targeting the company’s firewalls as a vector to break into its customers’ networks, as WIRED chronicled in October . Sophos went so far as to download surveillance “implants” to its devices that the hackers were testing to better monitor and preempt their intrusion techniques—and to gain more information about who they were and where they operated. Now, following Sophos’s revelations, those hackers have been hit with sanctions from the US government, and one of them has been indicted by name. Sichuan Silence Information Technology, based in Chengdu, and an alleged hacker named Guan Tianfeng are accused of hijacking 81,000 firewalls by exploiting a zero-day vulnerability that Guan is said to have discovered. Sichuan Silence, a known seller of disinformation tools to the Chinese government, and Guan are accused of targeting 23,000 firewalls in the US specifically, 36 of which were used in US critical infrastructure networks. What Went Wrong: More teams means more politicking When Mack Brown seemingly spent as much time on TV campaigning in 2004 as that year's presidential candidates, George W. Bush and John Kerry, his Texas Longhorns were among a small collection of teams vying for BCS bids. With the 12-team Playoff opening the top postseason opportunities to as many as 20 teams realistically, the political campaign ads that mercilessly ended in early November were replaced by the politicking of college football figures. Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard spent last week taking shots at SMU and other programs over strength of schedule -- a point neglecting that the Cyclones' losses came to unranked Texas Tech and sub-.500 Kansas. Arizona State's thorough dismantling of Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship Game solved that debate at the proverbial ballot box. However, brace yourself for an offseason of recount demands coming out of the SEC. Alabama's exclusion at 9-3, while 11-2 SMU landed the final at-large spot, is sure to play into the same controversy that South Carolina coach Shane Beamer leaned into last week. Beamer told The State (Columbia, S.C.) last week that his program may consider changing its nonconference scheduling in response to its seemingly inevitable Playoff snub. It's an odd position, given South Carolina's three losses all came in-conference, and the Gamecocks' nonleague slate included sub-.500 teams Old Dominion, Akron and FCS Wofford. But then again, how often are political campaign pitches rooted in logic? What Went Wrong: Quantity over quality? A more salient position in Beamer's case for South Carolina is that the Gamecocks scored quality wins during a season-ending, six-game streak. With its Rivalry Week defeat of Clemson, South Carolina added a victory over a Playoff qualifier to complement victories over Texas A&M and Missouri. Alabama, meanwhile, boasts wins over No. 2 overall seed Georgia and that same South Carolina team in contention. SMU's resume might be the most likely to draw ire, given the Mustangs received the last at-large berth. However, SMU beat nine- and eight-win Duke and Louisville, with two losses by a combined six points. Indiana should be the more contentious at-large choice, with the Hoosiers beating only one team that finished above .500: 7-5 Michigan. Indiana's only other matchup with an above-.500 opponent was a 38-15 blowout at Ohio State. That's something Alabama and South Carolina have in common with Indiana, as all three teams lost in routs. Alabama dropped a 24-3 decision late in the season at Oklahoma that presumably doomed the Crimson Tide's chances, while South Carolina lost to Ole Miss 27-3. To that end, there are arguments to be made for and against every team that was on the bubble. No system will ever appease all parties. What Went Wrong: Seeding conundrum Much of the Playoff's very existence flies in the face of college football tradition. One facet of how the field was set that upholds tradition in its own small way is rewarding teams for winning their conferences by reserving the four first-round byes for league champions. When this format was implemented, however, the committee could not have envisioned that two of the top five conference champions would not be ranked in the top 10. Because three-loss Clemson survived a furious SMU comeback in the ACC championship game, and Arizona State caught fire after underwhelming losses to Texas Tech and Cincinnati to win a weak Big 12, the committee was in the unusual position of having to slot a non-power conference champion and double-digit-ranked team in a top-four spot. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley knew the Eagles season rushing record could be his on Sunday with the type of stellar performance that has become the standard during his first season in Philadelphia. As for the exact moment Barkley hit the milestone, he wasn't sure — until the “MVP!” chants echoed throughout the Linc after a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter . “The records are great, they put a smile on your face,” Barkley said, “but the season is far from over.” Needing 109 yards to break LeSean McCoy's record, Barkley rushed for 124 yards and pushed his season total to 1,623 in a 22-16 victory over Carolina . Barkley needed just 13 games to pass McCoy, who rushed for 1,607 yards in 2013. He also overtook Wilbert Montgomery, who had 1,512 yards in 1978. “I never wrote the goal down to break it,” Barkley said. “You're always aware of it. That's how I train. That's how I operate in the offseason. I want to be great.” Barkley also maintained his pace to break Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams. “That would be extremely cool to do,” Barkley said. “If it happens, it happens, and not with the mindset of, I'm scared to go try to do it.
