Mumbai: A 75-year-old retired ship captain from Mumbai has fallen victim to a cyber fraud scheme falsely promising lucrative returns on stock market investments, losing a staggering Rs 11.16 crore between August and November this year, police said on Wednesday. Police arrested one Kaif Ibrahim Mansuri, a history-sheeter, and found 33 debit cards and 12 chequebooks belonging to different banks in his possession in connection with the cyber fraud case, an official said. The victim, who had a keen interest in stock market investments, was lured by fraudsters with promises of hefty returns on investments in stocks. Initially, the victim saw profits in his online investment account. However, when he attempted to withdraw his earnings, he was told to pay a 20 per cent service tax fee. Realising he had been scammed, the victim lodged a complaint with the South Cyber Police Station, the official said. "Between August to November this year the victim was duped of a staggering Rs 11.16 crore," police stated. During the investigation, authorities uncovered that the fraudsters had used multiple bank accounts to siphon off the funds. The victim had made 22 transactions, transferring money to these accounts. Upon tracking two accounts, the police discovered a withdrawal of Rs 6 lakh via cheque by a woman who had provided a PAN card for KYC verification. The woman, when questioned, admitted to withdrawing the money on the instructions of Kaif Ibrahim Mansuri. Police arrested Mansuri in South Mumbai, finding him in possession of 33 debit cards linked to 12 different bank accounts, which had been used to transfer Rs 44 lakh from the victim’s funds. Further investigations are underway, officials said. It didn't take Syracuse first-year coach Fran Brown long to figure out the key matchup for Saturday afternoon's Atlantic Coast Conference game visiting Miami. "Syracuse has a really good quarterback," Brown said of Kyle McCord, "and Miami has a really good quarterback (Cam Ward)." With a win on Saturday, the No. 6 Hurricanes (10-1, 6-1 ACC) can clinch a berth in the league championship game against SMU. Miami is a 10 1/2-point favorite for Saturday's game. Syracuse (8-3, 4-3) has reached eight wins for just the fourth time since 2002, going 8-5 in 2010 and 2012 and 10-3 in 2018. However, the Orange haven't defeated a Top-10 team since knocking off Clemson in 2017. Miami leads the nation in scoring (44.7), and the Hurricanes will count on perfect passing conditions in Syracuse's dome. That could be huge for Ward, who leads the nation with 34 touchdown passes, ranking second in passing yards (3,774) and fourth in passing efficiency. Ward's top target is wide receiver Xavier Restrepo, who needs just 21 yards to reach 1,000 for the second straight season. Restrepo also ranks tied for seventh in the nation with 10 TD receptions. Ward has some other top targets, including 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end Elijah Arroyo, who is a walking mismatch because of his size and speed. He leads Miami with 18.5 yards per reception. Syracuse's run game is led by LeQuint Allen, who has rushed for 819 yards, a 4.3 average and 12 TDs. The issue for Syracuse could be its defense, which ranks 13th in the ACC in points allowed (27.8). None of that matters much to players and coaches — not with the 125th rendition of the Army-Navy game on deck Saturday. “It’s a game and a season really all of its own,” Army coach Jeff Monken said Tuesday. “We’ve had a good year. You make it a great year by winning this game coming up on Saturday. Frankly, that’s just the way it goes around here.” Monken’s Black Knights are ranked 19th in the country after routing Tulane to win the American Athletic Conference. They’re 11-1, unbeaten in the AAC in their first season in it and their only loss came to College Football Playoff -bound Notre Dame. Marshall awaits in the Independence Bowl. Navy will face Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl to cap its first winning season since 2019. Still, there’s no way the Midshipmen are looking past this rivalry to the Sooners. “Oklahoma’s not on our mind right now because it’s all Army-Navy,” linebacker Colin Ramos said. “This is our No. 1 goal, and then after that, we’ll have about a week and a half, two weeks — whatever it is — to prepare.
