Pocholo Gonzales is a veteran Filipino voiceover artist and mentor who has developed an AI project that lets users talk to Jose Rizal. Called " Conversations with Rizal ," the AI agent features Gonzales’ voice as the Philippine National Hero. It launches on Rizal Day, and will initially be available for three months. The AI version of Rizal is able to talk to users and interact with them in Tagalog, English, German, and many more languages, just like the famed polyglot. According to Amazon Web Services , an AI Agent is “a software program that can interact with its environment, collect data, and use the data to perform self-determined tasks to meet predetermined goals.” The project was 20 years in the making, with Gonzales pouring out his passion and money to allow users to have a conversation with Rizal. GMA News Online spoke with Gonzales about this passion project, what it means to him, and hopefully, to every Filipino. Conversations with Rizal The AI Rizal is able to speak about his life experiences, and his novels like “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.” The project took 20 years in the making, beginning with Gonzales’ self-studies of AI starting from the early days of the Internet. “Dun ako nagkaroon ng interest. Sabi ko one day, I want to create, I want to put my voice in artificial intelligence so that many people can use it.” According to Gonzales, he did not compromise the accuracy of Rizal’s life. For the AI initiative, he poured over books about and written by the National Hero. The project’s content is based on these as well as Rizal’s diaries. Gonzales also did the programming and coding of Conversations with Rizal with the help of CreatiVoices Labs, the company he founded that combines “advanced AI with voice artistry, offering ethical, lifelike voices and top audio solutions for media and beyond.” When the tool is opened, users can ask Rizal to speak Tagalog, English, Spanish, and other languages the hero was fluent in like Japanese and German. As the voice, Gonzales learns the languages and records himself, speaking the way he imagines the hero would sound like in real life, with the Spanish style of speaking in Tagalog and the Laguna accent. Gonzales recorded the voice in 2014 when he was 35 years old, just like Jose Rizal when he died. According to Gonzales, Rizal has been his personal hero since childhood and looks at Conversations with Rizal as a way for him to honor his hero. Calling Rizal his "mentor," Gonzales said his nationalism, education, and youth empowerment are values he also tries to live with. Gonzales also made sure that users will respect the AI Rizal, limiting the tool’s knowledge to Rizal’s real-life experiences during his time. “Limited lang niya sa kung ano alam niya. Hindi siya ‘yung masyadong matalino na lahat alam," he said. "Wala siyang opinyon sa lahat, ibig sabihin. May opinyon lang siya sa mga bagay na nakakaapekto sa kanya.” For example, when the AI tool is asked a personal question such as “How do I deal with stress?” Rizal will speak about his past experiences and give advice based on those. The AI does not provide comments on today’s political climate, modern pop culture, and the like. “Hindi mo siyang maloloko. Sabihin niyang, ‘I cannot answer that because I’m not part of your world,’” Gonzales explained. He hopes to open donations to maintain the project after its three-month period. He also aims to partner with the Department of Education, the Commission on Higher Education, and institution schools to allow students to use the tool in classes. “Excited ako dito para sa kabataang Pilipino,” Gonzales said. The VoiceMaster Gonzales is dubbed the VoiceMaster of the project. His artistic journey started from childhood. With no television in their home, Gonzales grew up being entertained by the radio, and impersonating all the various voices he would hear. As he grew older, Gonzales continued learning about the artistry as a triple major in Speech Communication, Theater Arts, and English Creative Writing at the University of the Philippines Diliman. This was also where he had a more in-depth experience learning about Philippine history. Gonzales’ decades-long career spans a variety of ads, dubbing, reporting, and acting roles on television and radio. With influences from renowned Filipino impersonators like Willie “Willie Nep” Nepomuceno, Neil Ocampo, and Willy Sarion, Gonzales can likewise act like politicians President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, former Presidents Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, Rodrigo Duterte, and many more. Gonzales can also impersonate the voices of Dolphy Quizon, Fernando Poe Jr., Babalu, and many more. Gonzales was one of the voices of Kiko Matsing on “Batibot,” PenPen on “Makulay ng Buhay,” and the title characters on “Bubu Chacha,” among many others. His personal favorite role was as Shancai’s father in the Philippine dub of “Meteor Garden.” He also has experience in AI voicing, and is heard in the narration of users’ Instagram Reels and TikToks. Gonzales is also a mentor and conducts workshops, and said he is “the man behind a thousand voices.” He guided Dingdong Dantes for his voice role in “Kubot,” coached Daniel Matsunaga’s Tagalog speaking skills, and trained former Philippine Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay in public speaking. Purpose Though he is already an industry veteran, Gonzales’ purpose remains clear. “I believe that our voice is a gift from God, and it’s how we use it, it’s our gift back to God,” he said. “Without our voice, we are nothing. Binigyan tayo ng Diyos ng libreng boses, libreng buhay. Ibalik natin sa Diyos ‘yan ng tama.” Gonzales adds that he loves what he does. “Because for me, if you love what you’re doing, it’s as if you’re already resting all your life. You’re not going to work a single day because you love what you’re doing.” He added, “I treat voice acting as an art and I use my voice to create positive social change.” His purpose, in turn, is what guided him into the Conversations with Rizal initiative. Donald Trump Jr has emerged as the most influential Trump family member in the transition as the president-elect builds the most controversial cabinet in modern US history, according to a half dozen sources with knowledge of his role, elevating inexperienced loyalists over more qualified candidates for top positions in his administration. Trump, who fiercely prizes loyalty, has long relied on family members for political advice, but which relative has his ear is known to vary. This time, it is Don Jr who has helped cabinet contenders sink or rise to the fore - from championing Senator JD Vance as Trump's running mate to blocking former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from joining the cabinet, according to the sources, who include donors, personal friends and political allies. Don Jr is due to join conservative venture capital fund 1789 Capital, although one of the sources said he will continue to host his politics-focused podcast and support candidates that espouse Trump's brand of politics. He will provide advice to his father in the White House, the source added, although they cautioned that Don Jr was unlikely to be involved in day-to-day deliberations. Don Jr and the Trump-Vance transition team did not respond to a request for comment. In addition to ensuring candidates are loyal to his father, Don Jr typically seeks out contenders who embrace an anti-establishment worldview, including protectionist economic policies, and a reduction in military interventions and overseas aid, according to a handful of the sources and Don Jr's own comments on social media site X and in public. Two of the candidates Don Jr championed may face a rocky confirmation process in the Senate: Robert F Kennedy Jr, who Trump plans to nominate as the top US health official, and Tulsi Gabbard, who Trump plans to nominate as intelligence chief. Kennedy is an environmental activist who has spread misinformation on vaccines. Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman, implied that Russian President Vladimir Putin had valid grounds for invading Ukraine and stirred controversy when she met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the midst of his bloody crackdown on dissidents in 2017. Don Jr was also instrumental in lobbying his father to pick his close friend Vance as Trump's running mate - a win that has given him extra political capital as an adviser during the transition, one of the sources added. "The reality this time is we actually know what we're doing," Don Jr told Fox News earlier this month. "And it's about surrounding my father with people who are both competent and loyal." Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner were prominent in his 2016 presidential campaign, the subsequent transition and throughout his first term. This time, they are far less active, although Kushner, formerly Trump's senior adviser who focused on the Middle East, told Reuters that he is briefing real estate investor Steve Witkoff on his new job as special envoy to the region. "I have been working with Witkoff to get him up to speed on Trump's past efforts," Kushner said through a spokesperson. A half-dozen sources close to Kushner said they expect him to be involved in Middle Eastern policy in an unofficial capacity, with the goal of normalising relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia under an expansion of the 2020 Abraham Accords. Kushner helped broker the accords, a series of normalisation agreements between Israel and Arab nations. Kushner, Ivanka and sibling Eric Trump, who runs the Trump Organization business, do not plan to join the new administration, according to their representatives as well as sources. One source close to the transition said Trump does not appear to need his family for advice as much as in the past because of aides like Susie Wiles, who helped to run the most disciplined of his election campaigns to date. Trump has named Wiles as his chief of staff, a powerful position in Washington. "Stuff is really buttoned down," the source said of Trump's current team. "He may not need the family this time like he used to."‘No, we want it now’: Mashatile pushes back on DA demands on Bela Act

(Xinhua/Liu Chan) CHONGQING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- A total of 54 individuals, including 19 foreigners, received their vocational skill certificates as "hotpot chefs" on Friday, becoming the first batch of professionals to be officially accredited for this occupation in China. After passing previous cooking exams, these skilled workers from countries such as Poland, Pakistan and Ghana were awarded certificates of various levels during the Launch Ceremony of the Belt and Road International Skills Certification, held in southwest Chongqing Municipality on Friday. "I am happy to pass the certification exam and receive my certificate as a junior-level hotpot chef," said Claudia Katarzyna Bzyl, a Polish student at the School of Economics and Business Administration, Chongqing University. She added that after undergoing systematic training, she now has a deeper understanding of Chongqing's hotpot and has developed a fondness for its food culture. "I will continue learning and plan to open a Chongqing hotpot restaurant in Poland. Thus, people can savor Chongqing flavor," Bzyl said. A detailed standard outlining the profession's definition, skill levels and vocational training requirements was jointly published in February by China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Commerce. Renowned nationwide for its spicy hotpots, Chongqing took the lead in formulating the industry standard. As of June 2024, the municipality was home to around 37,000 hotpot restaurants, with the total output of the hotpot industry chain reaching 300 billion yuan (about 41.7 billion U.S. dollars), according to the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce. Chongqing has made significant progress in establishing an international evaluation system for skilled talent, according to Xie Liguo, head of the Chongqing Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, the organizer of the ceremony. During the event, Chongqing also launched other international skills certifications across various sectors, including catering, logistics, the internet and new energy. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday nominated Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, as the US ambassador to France, in the latest of several controversial picks. Kushner "is a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker, who will be a strong advocate representing our Country & its interests," Trump said on his Truth Social website, adding that Jared "worked closely with me in the White House." The choice is in keeping with Trump's pattern, so far, of selecting people, often wealthy, who are close to his family or of proven loyalty. Kushner is a multimillionaire real estate executive and former attorney; his son was a senior adviser during Trump's first term. Trump did not mention, however, that the elder Kushner once served jail time -- a two-year sentence, most of it served in a federal prison. Kushner, who is now 70, pleaded guilty in 2004 to 18 counts of tax evasion, witness tampering and making illegal campaign contributions. The case, which was prosecuted by then US attorney Chris Christie, included sordid details, to which Kushner admitted: that he had hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, a man cooperating in a campaign finance inquiry, and then videotaped the encounter and sent it to the man's wife, Kushner's sister, to dissuade her from testifying against him. Christie, who worked on Trump's first presidential transition team and then opposed him in this year's Republican primary contests, later said Kushner had committed a "loathsome" and "disgusting crime." In 2020, Trump issued a pardon to Kushner, whose conviction had resulted in him being disbarred in three states. Nominees for key ambassadorships are often business associates of a president-elect, or major political donors. But it is rare, if not unprecedented, to name a convicted felon. The first two men to fill the prestigious Paris post were famed inventor and statesman Benjamin Franklin and a future president, Thomas Jefferson. If confirmed, Kushner would succeed Denise Bauer, a former ambassador to Belgium who was a major Democratic fundraiser and donor. md/bbk/md
