CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) — With a Lake Effect Snow Warning issued for Southern Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties starting Friday and the possibility of the snow band shifting north on Saturday, city, county and state officials are preparing for whatever the weather system has in store for Western New York. “We don't know exactly where it's going to hit,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said at a news conference at the county’s salt barn on Harlem Road in Cheektowaga. “So we’ve got to be prepared that it's going to hit everywhere. And that's what we're prepared for.” Acting Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon asked residents to keep an eye on warnings about the weather and travel bans. “Now, these forecasts can switch very quickly based on wind and things of that nature," said Scanlon. "So make sure you're paying attention to any communication that's coming out.” Regarding the Buffalo Bills game on Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers, Poloncarz said he’s been in constant contact with the team and that there are no plans in the works to move the game elsewhere. “Our concerns are two-fold,” Poloncarz said. “Getting people to and from the stadium. It's a later game, which means the lots open later...and also if it's really bad, you’ve got people stuck on the road. If you’ve got 70,000 people trying to get to the football stadium at a time we have heavy snow, that's a problem.” I also paid a visit to the Thruway Authority garage by the Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga where Matthew Lutko, Buffalo Division Director, discussed new technology and equipment aimed at keeping drivers and the plows safer. He told me that a new warning system will be in place for drivers using Waze or Google Maps while on the I-190. “As people are driving when they get within a distance, that will tell them [an alert that] there is a plow truck ahead to prepare them for it,” Latko said. “It's great new technology. We're hoping it helps keep everybody slow and safe and give that warning that there is a truck up ahead.” You may also notice new green lights added to the lighted arrows on the backs of Thruway snow plows. (WV News) — His name is as big a part of West Virginia football history as is Pat White’s or Steve Slaton’s or Tavon Austin’s and tied quite closely to Rich Rodriguez’s because without Grant Wiley it is highly possible Rodriguez would not be reintroduced on Friday afternoon as West Virginia’s new football coach. Grant Wiley was Rodriguez’s middle linebacker when Rodriguez was named to coach the Mountaineers for the first time, went through the first season with him and suffered the same humiliation that comes with any 3-8 season. But on a Wednesday night in Blacksburg, Va., Grant Wiley made the play that may have turned Rodriguez’s coaching legacy around. WVU was 7-2 in Rodriguez’s second season, underdogs to No. 13 Virginia Tech. They were leading, 21-18, fourth-and-1 on the 1-yard line when Frank Beamer gave the ball to his All-American running back Lee Suggs. Suggs headed straight for the end zone but never got there as Wiley broke through low and took his legs out from under him, saving the day for the Mountaineers. But, then when you step in that tunnel and you are standing next to him — and I remember saying ‘Coach Rod, put up 60’ and him looking at me and saying ‘Yessssss.’ “It was that wonderful moment where you are together and you say, ‘OK, he’s got my back and I got his back.’ That is part of the hard edge he has mastered. It’s something that any player today, who is going through the decision process of the transfer portal will consider. “He said in a team meeting, ‘This may be the hardest you have ever worked in your life.’ I recommend that any player to step up to that challenge because it’s not just about your career today, but about what you will learn about yourself for the rest of your life.’” And so it is with Rodriguez’s players. The swift collapse, after 54 years, of Syria's al-Assad dynasty has just transformed the Middle East's geopolitical landscape. The lightning offensive by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militia took all of Syria's neighbours -- and everyone else -- by surprise. The news that President Bashar al-Assad had fled to Russia confirms the one binding truth about wars: unintended consequences can extend far beyond the theatre of battle. The Oct 7, 2023, attack that Hamas carried out against Israeli civilian communities bordering Gaza triggered earthquakes across the Middle East. Israel's ruthless offensive to destroy Hamas in Gaza and in Lebanon against Hezbollah practically obliterated Iran's "axis of resistance", while the United States and the United Kingdom pummelled the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen in response to Houthi attacks on international shipping. Syria's civil war began in 2011 when the Assad regime crushed peaceful "Arab Spring" protests. But the fighting largely subsided after 2015, when Russia's intervention, together with assistance from Iran and Hezbollah, turned the war in Mr Assad's favour. Today, with Iran's proxies destroyed and Russia's war-fighting capabilities drained by its Ukraine quagmire, the rebels saw their chance. With Turkish assistance, and apparently Qatar's as well, the rebels easily overran the regime's surprisingly thin defences, and Mr Assad's army capitulated without a battle. After Mr Assad's Iranian and Russian patrons hastily evacuated their forces and left him to his fate, a regime built on torture and mass slaughter no longer inspired fear. The end of Iran's alliance with Syria, its main stronghold in the Arab world, will reshape the regional balance of power. As Mohammad Ali Abtahi, a former Iranian vice president, put it two days before Mr Assad fled, the Syrian government's fall "would be one of the most significant events in the history of the Middle East ... Resistance in the region would be left without support. Israel would become the dominant force". The name Hayat Tahrir al-Sham stands for the liberation of the Levant, which in the early Caliphate's political lexicon comprises Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine. But Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the HTS leader, has tried to project an image of a new kind of Islamist. He seems to have drawn the necessary lessons from the failures of al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS) and now sees himself as a pragmatist who aspires only to bring about the "liberation of Syria from its oppressive regime". A sign of this new pragmatism is Mr Jolani's instructions to his men to allow Syria's prime minister, Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, to continue to run public institutions until they are formally handed over. IS would have carried out mass executions of soldiers and officials. Still, Mr Jolani leads a hard-line Islamist organisation. Those who expect that Turkey may temper HTS's extremism assume that Mr Jolani would be an obedient soldier of Turkey. In any case, Mr Jolani faces powerful political constraints. He must reckon with myriad rival militias that united just to topple Mr Assad and also with the Kurdish forces who rushed to take control of more parts of eastern Syria while under attack from Turkish forces in the north. To Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the ambitions of Syria's Kurds threaten to spur nationalist subversion within Turkey's own Kurdish communities. In 2019, Mr Erdogan sent his army to establish a 30-kilometre-wide "security zone" in northern Syria and push Kurdish fighters away from the Turkish border, an area where the Kurds had seized the opportunity of the civil war to consolidate an autonomous enclave. Mr Jolani now must work hard to find a compromise between the Kurds' desire to maintain their autonomy and Turkey's ambitions to keep them away from the border area. Will Mr Erdogan tolerate Kurdish territorial gains that he sees as a threat to Turkey's national security? Will Mr Jolani, who aspires to nationwide support, allow Turkey to wage war against the Kurds while he tries to form a governing coalition with them and uphold Syria's territorial sovereignty? Notwithstanding his chronic conflict with Syria's Kurds, Mr Erdogan views Mr Assad's fall as a grand achievement. He was ecstatic in following the rebel forces' advance. "Idlib, Hama, Homs, and the target, of course, is Damascus. ... Our wish is that this march in Syria continues without incident," he said after last Friday's prayers in Istanbul. For years, Mr Erdogan and his Qatari allies have been supporting Islamist groups throughout the Middle East. He saw himself in competition with the Iranians on what model of Islamic democracy should prevail in Muslim lands: the Shia fundamentalist brand or Turkey's more moderate form. Now he believes he has won the opportunity to shape such a model close to home. Although Syria's rebels have much to thank Israel for in creating the conditions for their success, Israel harbours no illusions about its new neighbours. Mr Jolani was born in Syria's Golan Heights (hence the name Jolani), which Israel captured in the 1967 war, and whose annexation and sovereignty was recognised by US President Donald Trump in 2019. With the rebel march on Damascus, Israel lost no time in deploying combat units along the Syrian border. Israel is concerned about potential spillovers of armed groups into the Golan Heights and attempts to attack Druze villages on the Syrian side of the border, whose residents have relatives in villages on the Israeli side. With the memory of Oct 7 still raw everywhere in Israel, there is no complacency about weapons stockpiles in the hands of Islamists on the border. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hubris should not be underestimated. If the Syrian tyranny collapsed, why not try to topple Iran's as well? Already, Mr Netanyahu could not resist the temptation of going beyond mere defensive measures: arguing that the 1974 agreement that regulated the separation of forces between Israel and Syria had collapsed, he ordered Israeli troops to seize control of the Syrian part of Mount Hermon, as well as the buffer zone in Syria's sovereign territory and the dominant positions adjacent to it. Key US allies in the region are similarly worried. They, too, would have liked to see Mr Assad remain in power, fearing that an Islamist-controlled Syria could become a haven for terrorism. In their view, Mr Assad was a known quantity -- and better than an Islamist rebel-led government, however moderate it claims to be. But now Mr Assad is gone. UBS cuts price target on Bayer on weak outlookBy Political Reporter- MDC leader Douglas Mwonzora has failed to pay rent at his law firm, Mwonzora and Associates. The politician’s property was attached last week in Belvedere after owing three months of rentals amounting to US$3750. The rentals accrued from July to September this year. The plaintiff, Simon Denhere, issued Mwonzora with summons demanding the rentals on September 19. Denhere then made an application on ex parte basis (in Mwonzora’s absence) at the Harare Civil Court where he was granted leave to attach property. The property, which included sofas, reception desk, office desk, four computers, two printers, office chairs and a generator, were attached through the Messenger of Court last Tuesday. This was done in terms of Section 34 of the Magistrate Court Act which allows landlords or landladies to attach property of their tenants without notice if any tenant fails to pay rent. It is meant to avoid suspicion that the tenant wants to leave the property without paying rent. Denhere also applied for the law firm’s eviction at the property at No. 44 Eastcourt Road, Belvedere, Harare. Mwonzora is also expected to pay US$1250 holding over damages if he wants to retain his property. In return the politician has also filed an urgent chamber application for the discharge. In his application, Mwonzora argues that it was not necessary for Denhere to proceed by way of an ex parte application. He also feels it was wrong for the Messenger of Court to remove the property in question, which includes case files of his clients, who had nothing to do with the issue. Technology dragged the index down, with the sector falling by a hefty 5.73% after weeks of big gains.
