Dr. Marty Makary, a prominent Johns Hopkins surgeon and author who opposed some pandemic lockdown measures and COVID-19 vaccine mandates, was nominated Friday by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Food and Drug Administration. In a statement announcing the nomination, Trump said Makary “will restore the FDA to the gold standard of scientific research” and “cut the bureaucratic red tape” at the agency to ensure Americans receive the medical cures and treatments they deserve. Makary’s nomination will require confirmation by the newly Republican-led Senate to take effect. Makary currently serves as head of Islet Transplant Surgery at Johns Hopkins, according to the university’s medical school bio, and also works as a public policy researcher. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Makary publicly criticized the FDA, suggesting the agency intentionally delayed the vaccine’s release to undercut then-President Trump. SEOUL — South Korea's acting leader has ordered an emergency safety inspection of the country's entire airline operations, a day after 179 people were killed in the deadliest plane crash on its soil. The Jeju Air plane burst into flames as it crash-landed in South Korea's Muan International Airport, killing everyone on board save for two victims. Acting President Choi Sang-mok has asked investigators into the incident to promptly disclose their findings to bereaved families. His request also comes as another Jeju Air flight turned back to Seoul shortly after takeoff on Monday, due to an unidentified landing gear issue. On Monday, the Jeju Air plane departed from Gimpo International Airport at 06:35 local time (21:35 GMT Sunday) and returned less than an hour later after realizing a mechanical defect caused by the landing-gear issue, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported. Landing gear refers to the set of wheels and other parts of the plane which supports the plane during takeoff, taxiing and landing. The aircraft that turned back was a Boeing B737-800, the same model as the one involved in the disaster on Sunday. Thirty-nine of the 41 aircrafts in Jeju Air's fleet are of this model. After Sunday's deadly crash, Boeing had said it was in touch with Jeju Air and that it stood "ready to support them". The 179 passengers on flight 7C2216 were aged between three and 78 years old, although most were in their 40s, 50s and 60s, according to Yonhap news agency. Two Thai nationals are among the dead and the rest are believed to be South Korean, authorities have said. On Sunday, the ill-fated plane had skidded off the runway after touching down and crashed into a wall shortly after 09:00 local time (00:00 GMT). A South Korean transport official had said that the plane had been attempting to land but was forced to hold off after air traffic control gave a bird strike warning - an alert about the risk of a collision with birds. Air traffic command later gave permission for the plane to land from the opposite direction, the official said. The airline's bosses bowed deeply as they gave a public apology at a press conference on Sunday. "We deeply apologise to all those affected by the incident. Trump, following Musk’s lead, threw in a new demand that the deal tackle the debt ceiling, always a politically tricky vote. But neither Democrats nor Republican fiscal hawks would give Trump that. In the end, legislators of both parties wanted to get home for Christmas, and both houses overwhelmingly passed a simple “continuing resolution” keeping the government funded at roughly present levels through March, plus disaster relief and farm aid. You might have missed it in amid the non-stop travails of the Labour government, but Kemi Badenoch is not doing well. Week after week at PMQs , Badenoch is presented with open goals (and she fails to score). For all the delusional optimism at the Conservative Party Conference in October as Labour slumped in the polls, the Tories are not benefiting from Keir Starmer’s plummeting popularity. It is Nigel Farage’s Reform party that seems to be capitalising on disillusionment with mainstream politics, with the three parties now wallowing around the mid-20s in terms of public support. How long will the Tories put up with this? The first big flashpoint for a new party leader is usually the May local elections. The council seats scheduled for election in 2025 were last fought in 2021, at the height of Boris Johnson’s vaccine bounce, before the Conservatives’ record on Covid became a liability. The party did unexpectedly well back then, setting the scene for a disappointing showing this time around. So the first thing to look out for is a furious drive for the Tories to set expectations. As dissatisfaction with Labour is growing by the day, Reform will be looking to prove they are a serious party that can convert popularity in a poll to actual gains. A strong Reform performance in May will stoke doubts that Badenoch is the right person see off the Farage threat and challenge Starmer. Runner-up Robert Jenrick, whose big pitch during the contest was do go hard on immigration, is still positioning himself a leadership contender should Badenoch show any signs of faltering (even if for the moment he serves as her shadow justice secretary). It would be ironic if Badenoch were able to cling on as leader thanks to Starmer delaying her first major test.
