ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Losses to the Chargers and Bengals with a playoff berth on the line show Sean Payton made a miscalculation when he agreed to flex the Denver Broncos' Week 16 game to a Thursday night. The NFL needed the Broncos' approval to replace the Cincinnati-Cleveland game with the Broncos-Chargers game because Denver had already played on a Thursday night on the road. He eagerly agreed to the switch, figuring the team's fanbase always travels well to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and the Broncos would be the more rested team at Cincinnati. But after an emotional comeback win over the Colts, the Broncos (9-7) lost to the Chargers in part because Payton got away from the run even though it helped them score touchdowns on their first three drives — and he had written “Run It!!” in marker on top of his play sheet. We had plenty of time, plenty of time, plenty of time,” Payton said. "And the decision we made was the right one.” Well ... An extra point assured Joe Burrow would get the ball back, and the Broncos hadn't forced a single punt all game, something Payton acknowledged afterward that he wasn't aware of, and they hadn't stopped the Bengals since twice holding them on fourth down in the first half. They finally forced a punt in overtime, but the Broncos went three-and-out, something they did again after Bengals kicker Cade York doinked a 33-yard field-goal attempt off the left upright on Cincinnati's second possession. With the Bengals out of timeouts, all the Broncos needed was a first down and they'd be playoff-bound for the first time since 2015, but Bo Nix misfired to tight end Adam Trautman on third-and-long, so the Broncos punted and Burrow led the Bengals (8-8) on their game-winning touchdown drive. “I thought we could move the ball in overtime,” Nix said, “but we didn't.” The Broncos could render all of it moot with a win in Week 18 against Kansas City with the Chiefs (15-1) expected to rely heavily on backups as they rest up for the playoffs as the AFC's top seed. But Denver's defense has been dismal since November, giving up the most yards in the league, and another letdown against the Chiefs would give the Broncos their biggest collapse in two decades. “This is what we do it for — meaningful games here,” Payton said. "I think it’s important that you embrace it, and it is exciting. There’s nothing worse than playing games in the last part of the season where there’s nothing at stake. So I think it’s something we’ll all be excited about.” What’s working Denver's pass rush. The Broncos sacked Burrow seven times, giving them a league-high 58 for the season. Zach Allen had a career-best 3 1/2 of them and Dondrea Tillman's sack gives the Broncos six players without at least five sacks this season. What needs help Riley Moss led the Broncos with 14 tackles but he had a tough return to action after missing a month with a sprained MCL. Burrow targeted him over and over, including on the game-winning touchdown throw to Tee Higgins, who caught three TD passes. “Riley could have been healthy for the last eight weeks. Whoever’s opposite Pat, they’re going to go that direction, right?" Payton said. (Higgins) is a good player. A real good player. It wasn’t anything that we didn’t expect. In other words, that happens when you’re teammates with Pat.” Stock up WR Marvin Mims Jr. had a breakout performance with eight catches for 103 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns, a 51-yarder and the 25-yard catch on fourth down in the closing seconds while sandwiched between two veteran defenders. Stock down Denver's defense. Even with Moss back, which allowed DC Vance Joseph to go back to relying more on man coverage, the Broncos defense continued to struggle since the calendar turned to December. Injuries The Broncos came out healthy although superstar CB Patrick Surtain II was limping on the game's final snaps. Key number 5 — Number of NFL rookie QBs to throw for at least 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns with Nix joining Justin Herbert, Baker Mayfield, Russell Wilson and Peyton Manning. What’s next It's all or nothing next week when a win over the Chiefs would send Denver to the playoffs. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLLSU head coach Brian Kelly knows who will be under center for his team during the 2025 season. "I feel like my time at LSU is not over," quarterback Garrett Nussmeier announced Wednesday. "I'm officially announcing that I'm returning for my final year of eligibility, and I am fully committed to bringing this university a championship. My teammates, coaches and fans will get the absolute best out of me every single day." This decision is surely a welcome one for the Tigers and will allow Nussmeier to improve his NFL stock before the 2026 draft. After all, B/R's NFL Scouting Department did not rank him in the top 100 overall players or top eight quarterbacks in its most recent big board of prospects for the 2025 NFL draft. In the modern-day world of college football with the transfer portal and NIL opportunities, it feels somewhat rare to see a quarterback stick with one program for so long. But Nussmeier arrived at LSU as a 4-star prospect in the recruiting class of 2021, per 247Sports' composite rankings, and is staying put for another season. While he sat behind Heisman winner Jayden Daniels during the 2023 campaign, Nussmeier earned the starting role heading into the 2024 season. He completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 3,739 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 12 games while leading the Tigers to an 8-4 record that included victories over South Carolina and Ole Miss. Nussmeier dealt with some turnover issues, including when he threw for a combined four touchdowns to five interceptions during three straight losses to Texas A&M, Alabama and Florida, and whether he can avoid those troubles next year could determine LSU's ceiling in the SEC. Still, he will provide a veteran presence for the Tigers as they look to compete for a conference crown and spot in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff field. And then the 2026 NFL draft may be waiting after that.

Senior Syracuse Orange quarterback Kyle McCord getting honored for Senior Day before the Syracuse Orange clashed with the University of Connecticut Huskies at JMA Wireless Dome Saturday, November 23, 2024. (N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com) N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com Chris Carlson | ccarlson@syracuse.com Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord continued to make the most out of his one year in Central New York on Saturday, lifting the Orange to a win over UConn and continuing his summit of the most prestigious one-year passing records in program history. One week after setting the school record for completions in a single season, the Ohio State transfer set a new school mark for passing yards. He’ll need one touchdown next week to break a tie with Ryan Nassib in that category too, giving him the holy trio of single-season passing records. The quarterback has been one of the best stories in college sports this year after leaving one of the pinnacles of the sport at Ohio State and joining forces with a new coach to re-energize the Syracuse football program. “It was the best decision that I’ve ever made in my life,” McCord said after the Orange’s 31-24 win over UConn on Saturday. “I think the people I’ve met and relationships I’ve created will go a lot further than wins, losses and records. I grew as a player and person more than I could have imagined. It was exactly what Coach Fran told me it was going to be but 10-11 months later to see it all play out, it was a great decision to come here.” Brown said one concern he had after landing McCord in the transfer portal was whether he would be a good enough coach to maximize the quarterback’s gifts. “He’s always had a high standard for himself,” Brown said. “I was more worried about how good he was and was I going to be a good enough coach to coach the kid and relate to him the right way. I knew he was a good player. .... I wanted to make sure we would fit. A lot of time coaches don’t fit with players.” Brown said the pair talk for an hour each week, starting with life items and eventually moving onto football, as part of the effort to build that communication. Brown said that McCord’s impact on the Syracuse program will go beyond this season, giving him an idea of where he should set expectations for professionalism for every Syracuse quarterback who enters the program. “The quarterback is No. 2 in the organization,” Brown said. “Now I have a standard of what the quarterback needs to look like being here. Not necessarily statistically because that’s hard. But how you prep, game preparation. I think he eliminates the (possibility) of not doing well because he prepares so much.” McCord’s preparation -- as well as that of his teammates, was on display against UConn, when the Orange offense lost its receptions leaders before halftime (Trebor Pena) and still went the length of the field for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. earned more snaps with Pena’s absence and showed minimal drop-off, catching nine passes for a team-high 177 yards. It was the type of result that only happens when a quarterback takes each moment of practice seriously, building connections with players down the roster just in case they become needed. McCord said it was a product of the time the pair have spent working together in practice that he was able to step in seamlessly. Gill’s previous career-high was four catches for 55 yards. “He’s done a great job when he’s gotten in the game in the past,” McCord said. “Obviously his volume isn’t as high as the other guys. But he practices his butt off, going 110 percent every rep. It gives me confidence when he’s in the game that he’s going to come down with it. Volume, of course, is no issue for McCord. He completed 37 of 47 throws for 470 yards and two touchdowns. He crossed the 300-yard threshold for the 10th time in 11 games. He will enter next week’s game with a chance to lead the country in passing, with one of his biggest threats on the opposing sideline with Miami. With one game remaining, McCord has 3,946 passing yards for the season, moving past Ryan Nassib’s 3,749 and positioning himself to become the program’s first 4,000-yard passer. “It’s a blessing,” McCord said. “To come here and take a leap of faith ... to have the year I had so far, I think it says a lot about the coaches and teammates around me. To hold that record is pretty sweet.” Contact Chris Carlson anytime: Email | Twitter | 315-382-7932 Fans can stream Syracuse football all season on fuboTV , and get cheap tickets to see the Orange from SeatGeek . Although the SPHS Jr Sharks put up an intense fight, they could not secure the win, allowing The Island Academy Girls to celebrate their victory. The male team’s Island Boyz and Rompe Pechitos faced off in the same category. Rompe Pechitos performed strongly, making the Island Boyz work hard for their victory. After the match, the Island Boyz celebrated and praised Rompe Pechitos for their effort on the court. Following the intermission, which included a brief ceremony honoring the winners of the Junior category, the games moved on to the COED division. However, WD 20s proved to be a formidable opponent, turning the tide in the final minute of the match and ultimately claiming the victory from the Warriors. After another intermission, the teams in the Senior division began preparing for the tournament’s final matches. The first match featured the female teams, with the San Pedro High School (SPHS) taking on Team Wildsets. SPHS started strong and took the lead but could not maintain their momentum. Elon Musk brings Trump’s government efficiency push to Capitol HillStocks closed higher on Wall Street, giving the market its fifth gain in a row and notching another record high for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The S&P 500 rose 0.3% Friday. The Dow added 1%, and the Nasdaq composite tacked on 0.2%. Retailers had some of the biggest gains. Gap soared after reporting quarterly results that easily beat analysts’ estimates. EchoStar fell after DirecTV called off its purchase of that company’s Dish Network unit. European markets closed mostly higher and Asian markets ended mixed. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. Crude oil prices gained ground. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. Stocks rose on Wall Street in afternoon trading Friday, keeping the market on track for its fifth straight gain. The S&P 500 was up 0.2% and was solidly on track for a weekly gain that will erase most of last week's loss. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 333 points, or 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite was essentially flat with a gain of less than 0.1% as of 3:07 p.m. Eastern. Markets have been volatile over the last few weeks, losing ground in the runup to elections in November, then surging following Donald Trump's victory, before falling again. The S&P 500 has been steadily rising throughout this week to within close range of its record. “Overall, market behavior has normalized following an intense few weeks,” said Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide, in a statement. Several retailers jumped after giving Wall Street encouraging financial updates. Gap soared 10.8% after handily beating analysts' third-quarter earnings and revenue expectations, while raising its own revenue forecast for the year. Discount retailer Ross Stores rose 1.5% after raising its earnings forecast for the year. EchoStar fell 2.4% after DirecTV called off its purchase of that company's Dish Network unit. Smaller company stocks had some of the biggest gains. The Russell 2000 index rose 1.8%. A majority of stocks in the S&P 500 were gaining ground, but those gains were kept in check by slumps for several big technology companies. Nvidia fell 3.3%. Its pricey valuation makes it among the heaviest influences on whether the broader market gains or loses ground. The company has grown into a nearly $3.6 trillion behemoth because of demand for its chips used in artificial-intelligence technology. Intuit, which makes TurboTax and other accounting software, fell 5.6%. It gave investors a quarterly earnings forecast that fell short of analysts’ expectations. Facebook owner Meta Platforms fell 0.8% following a decision by the Supreme Court to allow a multibillion-dollar class action investors’ lawsuit to proceed against the company. It stems from the privacy scandal involving the Cambridge Analytica political consulting firm. European markets closed mostly higher and Asian markets ended mixed. Crude oil prices rose. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.41% from 4.42% late Thursday. In the crypto market, Bitcoin hovered around $99,000, according to CoinDesk. It has more than doubled this year and first surpassed the $99,000 level on Thursday. Retailers remained a big focus for investors this week amid close scrutiny on consumer spending habits headed into the holiday shopping season. Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, reported a quarter of strong sales and gave investors an encouraging financial forecast. Target, though, reported weaker earnings than analysts' expected and its forecast disappointed Wall Street. Consumer spending has fueled economic growth, despite a persistent squeeze from inflation and high borrowing costs. Inflation has been easing and the Federal Reserve has started trimming its benchmark interest rates. That is likely to help relieve pressure on consumers, but any major shift in spending could prompt the Fed to reassess its path ahead on interest rates. Also, any big reversals on the rate of inflation could curtail spending. Consumer sentiment remains strong, according to the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index. It revised its latest figure for November to 71.8 from an initial reading of 73 earlier this month, though economists expected a slight increase. It's still up from 70.5 in October. The survey also showed that consumers' inflation expectations for the year ahead fell slightly to 2.6%, which is the lowest reading since December of 2020. Wall Street will get another update on how consumers feel when the business group The Conference Board releases its monthly consumer confidence survey on Tuesday. A key inflation update will come on Wednesday when the U.S. releases its October personal consumption expenditures index. The PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation and this will be the last PCE reading prior to the central bank's meeting in December. Damian J. Troise And Alex Veiga, The Associated Press
