(AP) — Losses to the Chargers and Bengals with a playoff berth on the line show Sean Payton made a miscalculation when he agreed to flex the Denver Broncos' Week 16 game to a Thursday night. The NFL needed the Broncos' approval to replace the Cincinnati-Cleveland game with the Broncos-Chargers game because Denver had already played on a Thursday night on the road. He eagerly agreed to the switch, figuring the team's fanbase always travels well to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and the Broncos would be the more rested team at Cincinnati. But after an emotional comeback win over the Colts, the Broncos (9-7) lost to the Chargers in part because Payton got away from the run even though it helped them score touchdowns on their first three drives — and he had written “Run It!!” in marker on top of his play sheet. We had plenty of time, plenty of time, plenty of time,” Payton said. "And the decision we made was the right one.” Well ... An extra point assured Joe Burrow would get the ball back, and the Broncos hadn't forced a single punt all game, something Payton acknowledged afterward that he wasn't aware of, and they hadn't stopped the Bengals since twice holding them on fourth down in the first half. They finally forced a punt in overtime, but the Broncos went three-and-out, something they did again after Bengals kicker Cade York doinked a 33-yard field-goal attempt off the left upright on Cincinnati's second possession. With the Bengals out of timeouts, all the Broncos needed was a first down and they'd be playoff-bound for the first time since 2015, but Bo Nix misfired to tight end Adam Trautman on third-and-long, so the Broncos punted and Burrow led the Bengals (8-8) on their game-winning touchdown drive. “I thought we could move the ball in overtime,” Nix said, “but we didn't.” The Broncos could render all of it moot with a win in Week 18 against Kansas City with the Chiefs (15-1) expected to rely heavily on backups as they rest up for the playoffs as the AFC's top seed. But Denver's defense has been dismal since November, giving up the most yards in the league, and another letdown against the Chiefs would give the Broncos their biggest collapse in two decades. “This is what we do it for — meaningful games here,” Payton said. "I think it’s important that you embrace it, and it is exciting. There’s nothing worse than playing games in the last part of the season where there’s nothing at stake. So I think it’s something we’ll all be excited about.” What’s working Denver's pass rush. The Broncos sacked Burrow seven times, giving them a league-high 58 for the season. Zach Allen had a career-best 3 1/2 of them and Dondrea Tillman's sack gives the Broncos six players without at least five sacks this season. What needs help Riley Moss led the Broncos with 14 tackles but he had a tough return to action after missing a month with a sprained MCL. Burrow targeted him over and over, including on the game-winning touchdown throw to Tee Higgins, who caught three TD passes. “Riley could have been healthy for the last eight weeks. Whoever’s opposite Pat, they’re going to go that direction, right?" Payton said. (Higgins) is a good player. A real good player. It wasn’t anything that we didn’t expect. While he sat behind Heisman winner Jayden Daniels during the 2023 campaign, Nussmeier earned the starting role heading into the 2024 season. One week after setting the school record for completions in a single season, the Ohio State transfer set a new school mark for passing yards. He’ll need one touchdown next week to break a tie with Ryan Nassib in that category too, giving him the holy trio of single-season passing records. The quarterback has been one of the best stories in college sports this year after leaving one of the pinnacles of the sport at Ohio State and joining forces with a new coach to re-energize the Syracuse football program. “It was the best decision that I’ve ever made in my life,” McCord said after the Orange’s 31-24 win over UConn on Saturday. “I think the people I’ve met and relationships I’ve created will go a lot further than wins, losses and records. I grew as a player and person more than I could have imagined. It was exactly what Coach Fran told me it was going to be but 10-11 months later to see it all play out, it was a great decision to come here.” Brown said one concern he had after landing McCord in the transfer portal was whether he would be a good enough coach to maximize the quarterback’s gifts. “He’s always had a high standard for himself,” Brown said. “I was more worried about how good he was and was I going to be a good enough coach to coach the kid and relate to him the right way. I knew he was a good player. .... I wanted to make sure we would fit. A lot of time coaches don’t fit with players.” Brown said the pair talk for an hour each week, starting with life items and eventually moving onto football, as part of the effort to build that communication. Brown said that McCord’s impact on the Syracuse program will go beyond this season, giving him an idea of where he should set expectations for professionalism for every Syracuse quarterback who enters the program. “The quarterback is No. 2 in the organization,” Brown said. “Now I have a standard of what the quarterback needs to look like being here. Not necessarily statistically because that’s hard. But how you prep, game preparation. I think he eliminates the (possibility) of not doing well because he prepares so much.” McCord’s preparation -- as well as that of his teammates, was on display against UConn, when the Orange offense lost its receptions leaders before halftime (Trebor Pena) and still went the length of the field for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. earned more snaps with Pena’s absence and showed minimal drop-off, catching nine passes for a team-high 177 yards. It was the type of result that only happens when a quarterback takes each moment of practice seriously, building connections with players down the roster just in case they become needed. McCord said it was a product of the time the pair have spent working together in practice that he was able to step in seamlessly. Gill’s previous career-high was four catches for 55 yards. “He’s done a great job when he’s gotten in the game in the past,” McCord said. “Obviously his volume isn’t as high as the other guys. But he practices his butt off, going 110 percent every rep. It gives me confidence when he’s in the game that he’s going to come down with it. Volume, of course, is no issue for McCord. He completed 37 of 47 throws for 470 yards and two touchdowns. He crossed the 300-yard threshold for the 10th time in 11 games. He will enter next week’s game with a chance to lead the country in passing, with one of his biggest threats on the opposing sideline with Miami. With one game remaining, McCord has 3,946 passing yards for the season, moving past Ryan Nassib’s 3,749 and positioning himself to become the program’s first 4,000-yard passer. “It’s a blessing,” McCord said. “To come here and take a leap of faith ... to have the year I had so far, I think it says a lot about the coaches and teammates around me. Although the SPHS Jr Sharks put up an intense fight, they could not secure the win, allowing The Island Academy Girls to celebrate their victory. The male team’s Island Boyz and Rompe Pechitos faced off in the same category. Rompe Pechitos performed strongly, making the Island Boyz work hard for their victory. After the match, the Island Boyz celebrated and praised Rompe Pechitos for their effort on the court. Following the intermission, which included a brief ceremony honoring the winners of the Junior category, the games moved on to the COED division. The final match in the Senior category featured the male teams of Barbos and Vikings. Both teams consisted of experienced volleyball players, and the game was closely contested throughout. Barbos took the lead multiple times, but the Vikings ultimately emerged victorious after several sets and rounds, securing a significant win in the Senior category. Following the final game, an awards ceremony was held for the COED and Senior category winners.
