NoneMr. John Streicker - Minister of Tourism and Culture - has shown his true colours. His ego and need to be right override the concerns and interests of Yukoners, taxpayers and cruise-ship visitors to the Carcross area who support local businesses. He clearly has forgotten he is a public servant. The Minister’s (and his representatives') response to the overwhelming negative feedback they received via letters, social media posts and a petition was "People don't like change." This pat response is insulting considering most comments and criticisms were constructive. Their response to the overwhelming negative face-to-face criticisms they received during the celebration of the new Yukon sign in Carcross was to do an about-face and run. And in one instance, when asked why "Larger than Life" was not printed on the new sign, the response received was that they did not want to put English on the sign. Numerous requests have been made to the Minister to reinstall one of the old signs at the B.C.-Yukon border rather than at the Watson Lake sign post or the Transportation Museum in Whitehorse. The Yukon sign at this location receives the highest numbers of annual visitors: over 100,000. This is a reasonable request that would address all the issues brought to his attention but to date, the Minister has not responded. The questions we have for the Minister are: 1. Why did he approve artwork of a deformed sheep (horn tips going in opposite directions, black eye, misaligned face, looks like it is missing one of its’ front legs) for the Yukon sign? This is an embarrassment for Yukoners and insulting to the other artists (artists were paid the same amount). 2. How can he justify stating to a tour operator that the artwork is not going to be changed even though he is fully aware of the issues regarding it? 3. Why should local business owners, Skagway tour operators and drivers suffer the embarrassment of your mistake and thus the disappointment of visitors for another four years? 4. Please explain how you expect anyone to be proud of this sign/artwork? 5. When can we expect to see the old sign reinstalled at the B.C.-Yukon Border? A sign we are proud of and visitors loved. Respectfully, Jacqueline St. Jacques on behalf of: Skagway Tour Operators/Drivers 100,000 Cruise Ship Visitors

It is known across Liverpool as the Radio City tower but that moniker may not be around much longer as the structure hosts its final live broadcast on Christmas Eve. Microphone cables are being bundled up and heaving contacts books packed into boxes, leaving empty what is arguably the most famous building of the city’s skyline – St Johns Beacon, to use its proper name. Built in 1969, originally as a luxury revolving restaurant that was one visited by Queen Elizabeth II, the tower was listed Grade II in 2020, with Historic England describing it as “embodying the technological bravura and spirit of the space age”. From the mid-80s it was mostly empty after it became apparent that a kitchen more than 100 metres in the air with two lift shafts and 558 stairs posed a fire hazard. In 2000 it was saved from dereliction when it become home to Radio City and emblazoned with the words “Radio City 96.7” large enough to be seen across Liverpool. “It was great excitement when we actually moved to the tower,” said Molly Marshall, who effectively managed the station’s office in a number of different roles throughout the years. “A helicopter came flying around and took a picture of us all waving from the top of the tower.” Every pop star who played the arena, Liverpool Empire, or filmed at Granada studios wanted to visit, she said, but there were “a lot of people you didn’t realise had a real fear of heights or a fear of lifts”. “One of the guys in Westlife, I think it was Nicky, he wouldn’t step foot in the lift so we had to drop a microphone down to reception while the others were interviewed in the studio.” The roads outside were often closed by police due to “thousands and thousands” of people waiting outside for pop stars, she said. Pete Price, the veteran radio DJ who spent more than two decades broadcasting from the tower, described being live on air in 2008 when an earthquake hit, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale. “It was the most unbelievable experience ever. It was a good job I was in an eight-second delay, because my language was absolute choice. So I had to cut myself off,” he said. “We just ran for our lives but we didn’t know where we were running.” Price said the tower would sway as much as seven inches (18cm) in the wind, which meant “you would actually see the blinds move and your seat on wheels would move as well, it’s scary”. During a 50-year broadcasting career, Price broke the story that Michael Jackson had died, beating the BBC and other news outlets, from the tower. On another occasion, the phone lines were blown as 19,000 people in one hour tried to get through to speak to a psychic, he said. Radio City was rebranded earlier this year, in order to consolidate Bauer’s brands, to Hits Radio Liverpool, and the decision was taken to move to a new office at ground level. Radio City’s viewing gallery, which “most of Merseyside have been in” and seen panoramic views of the city, is open until the end of December, after which the future is uncertain. Ideas have been put forward but nothing settled on: in 2020, a plan to build a zip wire between the tower and the central library was eventually vetoed by the then mayor, Joe Anderson. “I think to everybody it will always remain the Radio City tower, whatever it becomes,” said Marshall, who organised a 50th birthday party for Radio City in October with Carolyn Hughes, who worked as the founder’s PA and then in public relations for the station. Hughes said that on the last show at the tower she would “raise a glass to the memories”. She added: “Better to have loved and lost than never loved at all, I guess ... Rest easy Radio City, you can stand down now knowing you put a great shift in.”

The U.N. Integrated Office in Haiti said in a report published on Monday that between Dec. 6 and 11 more than 207 people were killed by the Wharf Jeremie gang. The gang took people from their homes and from a place of worship, interrogated them and then executed them with bullets and machetes. Earlier this month, human rights groups in Haiti had estimated that in the massacre, but the new U.N. investigation doubles the number of victims. “We cannot pretend that nothing happened” said María Isabel Salvador, the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative in Haiti. “I call on the Haitian justice system to thoroughly investigate these horrific crimes and arrest and punish the perpetrators, as well as those who support them,” she said in a statement. Human rights groups in Haiti said the after the son of Micanor Altès, the leader of the Wharf Jeremie gang, died from an illness. The Cooperative for Peace and Development, a human rights group, said that according to information circulating in the community, Altès accused people in the neighborhood of causing his son’s illness. “He decided to cruelly punish all elderly people and (Vodou) practitioners who, in his imagination, would be capable of casting a bad spell on his son,” the group said in a statement released shortly after news of the massacre emerged. In Monday’s report, the United Nations said that people were tracked down in their homes and in a place of worship by Altès’ gang, where they were first interrogated and then taken to an execution site. The United Nations said that the gang tried to erase evidence of the killings by burning bodies, or by dismembering them and throwing them into the sea. The massacre is the latest humanitarian tragedy in Haiti, where gang violence has intensified since the nation’s president was killed in . Haiti has struggled to organize an election that will fill the power vacuum and restore democratic rule. The Caribbean nation is currently governed by a transitional council that includes representatives from the business community, civil society and political parties, but its government has no control over many areas of the capital city, and gangs are constantly fighting over ports, highways and neighborhoods. According to the United Nations, more than 5,350 people have been killed in Haiti’s gang wars this year. The Haitian government acknowledged the massacre against older people in a statement issued earlier this month, and promised to persecute those responsible for this act of “unspeakable carnage.”

NEW YORK -- As Luigi Mangione pleaded not guilty Monday to state murder and terrorism charges in the brazen killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson , supporters of the suspect continued to donate tens of thousands of dollars for a defense fund established for him, leaving law enforcement officials worried Mangione is being turned into a martyr. Several online defense funds have been created for Mangione by anonymous people, including one on the crowdfunding website GiveSendGo that as of Monday morning had raised over $187,000. The GiveSendGo defense fund for the 26-year-old Mangione was established by an anonymous group calling itself "The December 4th Legal Committee," apparently in reference to the day Mangione allegedly ambushed and gunned down Thompson in Midtown Manhattan as the executive walked to his company's shareholders conference at the New York Hilton hotel. "We are not here to celebrate violence, but we do believe in the constitutional right to fair legal representation," the anonymous group said in a statement. The crowdfunding campaign prompted donations from thousands of anonymous donors across the country, many of them leaving messages of support for Mangione, including one person who called themselves "A frustrated citizen" and thanked Mangione for "sparking the awareness and thought across this sleeping nation." In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for GiveSendGo said the company "operates with a principle of not preemptively determining guilt or innocence." "Our platform does not adjudicate legal matters or the validity of causes. Instead, we allow campaigns to remain live unless they violate the specific terms outlined in our Terms of Use. Importantly, we do allow campaigns for legal defense funds, as we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to access due process," the GiveSendGo spokesperson said. The spokesperson added, "We understand the concerns raised by such campaigns and take these matters seriously. When campaigns are reported, our team conducts a thorough review to ensure they comply with our policies. While other platforms may choose a different approach, GiveSendGo's core value is to provide a space where all individuals, no matter their situation, can seek and receive support, with donors making their own informed decisions." Other crowdfunding sites such as GoFundMe have also taken down campaigns soliciting donations for Mangione's defense. "GoFundMe's Terms of Service prohibit fundraisers for the legal defense of violent crimes," the crowdfunding website said in a statement. "The fundraisers have been removed from our platform and all donors have been refunded." Amazon and Etsy have removed from their websites merchandise featuring Mangione, including T-shirts and tote bags reading "Free Luigi" and the phrase "Deny, Defend, Depose," words police said were etched in the shell casings discovered at the scene of Thompson's homicide. "Celebrating this conduct is abhorrent to me. It's deeply disturbing," Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg told ABC News senior investigative reporter Aaron Katersky in an interview last week. "And what I would say to members of the public, people who, as you described, are celebrating this and maybe contemplating other action, that we will be vigilant and we will hold people accountable. We are at the ready." When Mangione appeared in court Monday for his arrangement, more than two dozen young women, who had waited in the frigid cold outside the courthouse, said they were there to support the defendant. Most of the women wore face masks and a few appeared visibly emotional as Mangione entered the courtroom. "This is a grave injustice, and that's why people are here," one of the women, who said she arrived at the courthouse at 5 a.m., told ABC News. Other supporters outside the courthouse chanted, "Free, free Luigi" and "Eat the rich," and held signs reading, "People over profits" and "Health over wealth." Manhattan grand jury indicted Mangione last week on 11 charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism. Mangione is also facing federal charges that could get him the death penalty if convicted. Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, raised concerns in court Monday that her client is being used by police and New York City Mayor Eric Adams as "political fodder." Angifilo also slammed last week's extradition of Mangione back to Manhattan to face charges, calling Adams' presence amid the massive display of force used in the transfer "the biggest staged perp walk I have seen in my career." "What was the New York City mayor doing at this press conference -- that is utterly political," she said, before referencing the mayor's own criminal case. "The New York City mayor should know more than anyone the presumption of innocence." Retired FBI special agent Richard Frankel said suspects have received unsolicited support in previous politically charged violent crimes. "We saw it with the Unabomber," said Frankel, an ABC News contributor, referring to Ted Kaczynski, the mathematician-turn-domestic terrorist who blamed technology for a decline of individual freedom and mailed handcrafted explosives to targeted individuals between 1978 and 1995. Frankel said Eric Rudolph, who detonated a bomb in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Olympic Games and carried out three additional bombings as he eluded capture for five years, also attracted supporters. "In my opinion, they're supporting individuals who have committed potentially terrorist acts, but it's a politically charged act," Frankel said. Referring to the Thompson killing, Frankel added, "You can be up in arms about the health care industry, but you can't threaten or actually hurt members of the health care industry." Most recently, Marine veteran Daniel Penny was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man who was acting erratically on a New York City subway, after supporters donated more than $3 million to his legal defense fund. Law enforcement officials have expressed concern that Mangione is being turned into a martyr. Someone this week pasted "wanted posters" outside the New York Stock Exchange naming other executives. A recent bulletin released by the Delaware Valley Intelligence Center, a multi-agency law enforcement intelligence-sharing network based in Philadelphia, included a photo of a banner hanging from an overpass reading, "Deny, Defend, Depose," which are the same words etched on shell casings police said were recovered from the Thompson homicide scene. "Many social media users have outright advocated for the continued killings of CEOs with some aiming to spread fear by posting 'hit lists,'" the bulletin, obtained by ABC News, reads.

First Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains from Siemens Mobility in passenger service Siemens Mobility announced today that the first Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains have received authorization for passenger operation in time for the scheduled timetable change on December 15, 2024, and are ready to inaugurate passenger service. Their approval marks another significant milestone for emission-free mobility in the Berlin-Brandenburg and Bavarian regions, where hydrogen-powered trains will be used for the first time. CEO Rolling Stock, Siemens Mobility: “The first of these trains will now be entering passenger service and we are delighted to be a driving force behind the phasing out of diesel trains. This transition will reduce CO2 emissions and provide passengers in Germany with climate-friendly, powerful, and comfortable trains.” Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn Betriebsgesellschaft will operate on the line in Berlin-Brandenburg. These trains will save 1.1 million liters of diesel fuel per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 3,000 tons. Locally produced hydrogen will be used in the trains’ fuel cells, and water vapor will be the only emitted by-product. In addition, recovered braking energy will be used to further increase the trains’ energy efficiency. The , will replace diesel trains at Bayrische Regiobahn (BRB) for two and a half years as of Monday, December 16, 2024. Test operations will begin in stages, starting with selected runs in the East Allgäu-Lechfeld network. Operations will later be expanded and the train will then also run on the Ammersee-Altmühltal network. The new Mireo Plus H provides an environmentally friendly, quiet and efficient alternative to diesel propulsion, which is scheduled to be fully phased out in Bavaria’s regional rail system by 2040. The Mireo Plus H combines innovation with sustainability. The train has a long operating range of up to 1,200 kilometers, is powered by an H2 traction system with a high drive power of 1.7 MW for accelerating up to 1.1 m/s2, and has a top speed of 160 km/h. Employing state-of-the-art technology, the Mireo Plus H sets new standards in emission-free passenger transportation. We are especially pleased about this openness to new and innovative rail technology and that this climate-friendly and comfortable train will now be available to passengers in Bavaria and Berlin-Brandenburg. In the state of Brandenburg, Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn Betriebsgesellschaft is launching a large fleet of on its East Brandenburg network. The 31 battery trains will enter service in phases by the summer of 2025. The two-car trainset has a range of more than 120 kilometers on batteries alone. Operation of the battery-electric Mireo Plus B trains will reduce consumption of diesel fuel by around 4.4 million liters a year on the East Brandenburg network. The new trains will completely eliminate local CO2 emissions and, depending on the electricity mix, reduce broader regional emissions by around 11,500 tons per year. At the same time, the trains will significantly reduce particulate emissions. The new railcars are equipped with three doors on each side to ease access for passengers in wheelchairs or with strollers, also from lower station platforms. Each of the new trains will provide passengers with 127 seats and twelve spaces for bicycles, wheelchairs and strollers. Passengers will also have free WiFi service, a dynamic passenger information system, and a specially designated family area. In addition, around 60 power sockets and USB charging ports are conveniently distributed throughout the train. In December 2020, Deutsche Bahn ordered 25 Desiro HC trains and for service on the Danube-Isar network. The six Mireo trains were delivered in a 4-car configuration with 264 seats, including 14 seats in a first-class section, for the Airport Express operating from Nuremberg to Munich via Regensburg. All trains are equipped with duplex sliding steps to ease access for passengers with reduced mobility from different platform heights. In addition, an on-board lift enables wheelchair users to board and alight at low station platforms. A generous number of luggage racks makes it convenient for passengers to stow their baggage. Some of the have already been operating on the Danube-Isar network since August 2024. Positive customer feedback shows a high level of satisfaction with the new double-decker trains. The trains have multi-purpose open areas equipped with innovative supports for bicycles. High-frequency window glass specially developed to substantially improve mobile reception and free WiFi service ensure seamless communication. Up to three Desiro HC trains can run coupled between Munich and Landshut to provide great flexibility in meeting capacity needs. In addition, will inaugurate service for rail operator agilis on the Regensburg-Danube Valley network with the scheduled timetable change: They will run on RE line 50 (Nuremberg – Regensburg – Plattling) and RE line 51 (Neumarkt – Regensburg – Plattling). These trains will also be used for the Airport Express operating from Nuremberg to Munich. The high-performance trains offer more seating capacity and modern equipment and features, including WiFi service and high-frequency window glass for optimal mobile reception. Five engineering technology students at Purdue University have successfully transformed a battery-powered toy car into a functional powered wheelchair for a child in need. This innovative project, part of a two-semester capstone course, was delivered to a local family in mid-October, showcasing the students’ commitment to community service and hands-on learning. Key Takeaways The GoBabyGo Program GoBabyGo was founded by Cole Galloway, a professor at the University of Delaware, with the mission to improve mobility and quality of life for young children. The program provides modified ride-on cars at no cost to families, allowing children to explore their environment independently. Since its inception, GoBabyGo has expanded globally, with various university chapters engaging students in meaningful community service. Project Goals and Achievements The capstone project set forth three primary objectives for the students: The students successfully met these goals, demonstrating their engineering skills and commitment to social responsibility. Personal Connection and Educational Impact Brittany Newell, the associate professor leading the project, has a personal connection to the cause, as she has a friend with a child requiring mobility assistance. Newell emphasized the importance of experiential learning, stating, "Just as important as the product is, as a teacher, I saw how meaningful it would be for our students." The project not only provided a valuable service to the community but also served as a practical learning experience for the students. Newell plans to integrate concepts from this project into future courses, aiming to develop more advanced mobility devices that can be used in introductory engineering classes. Future Aspirations Newell envisions the GoBabyGo project expanding in the future, as the demand for mobility devices for children far exceeds current production capabilities. She expressed her hope for continued funding to sustain the project each semester, allowing more students to participate and more children to benefit. With a background in biomedical engineering, Newell is passionate about creating medical and mobility devices. Her previous work includes various innovative projects, and she aims to inspire her students to tackle real-world challenges through applied education. Conclusion The successful creation of a powered wheelchair through the GoBabyGo program exemplifies the intersection of engineering education and community service. As students continue to engage in projects that address real needs, they not only enhance their skills but also make a significant impact on the lives of children in their community. Newell’s commitment to this initiative reflects the broader mission of the Polytechnic Institute to advance technology for societal betterment, one project at a time. Sources

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Dejounte Murray plans to return to the ' lineup on Wednesday night for the first time since in a season-opening victory over Chicago on Oct. 23. And when Murray takes the court against the , his mother will be on his mind. After practice on Tuesday, Murray discussed his impending return and disclosed more details about the previously unspecified “personal matters” that caused him to leave the team during the final days of the preseason. His mother had a stroke, he said. “It was tough to leave and go deal with that. As she got better, she wanted me to come play,” Murray said of his last-minute decision to start against Chicago. He added that his hand injury near the end of that game was God's way of telling him, “‘Nah, you need to stay with your mom.’” “I was more concerned about my mother. That was my priority,” Murray continued. “I wasn’t really worried about my recovery.” Murray's mother has recovered well, he said, while he is “healthy and ready to help this team.” “I’m ready to hoop. Play for my mother — she’s going to be watching," Murray said. “I’m ready to compete, bring that winning spirit.” The Pelicans (4-14) certainly could use the help, having lost 14 of 16 games since opening the season with a pair of victories. Injuries have ravaged the roster. At times, all five starters have been out. Star power forward Zion Williamson has missed 12 games this season — one with an illness and 11 with a hamstring injury. Herb Jones has been sidelined by a shoulder strain and Brandon Ingram's status is in doubt after he sat out practice on Tuesday with calf soreness that also sidelined him during a loss on Monday night at Indiana. But at least two starters — Murray and fellow guard CJ McCollum — are expected to play against the Raptors. “I don’t care how many games we’ve lost. I just know every time I step on the floor I feel like we can win games,” said Murray, who had 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in his lone game with the Pelicans. "That’s just my mentality, and I feel like it can carry over to a lot of guys.” AP NBA:
